Appending elements is efficient because we are using the free slots at the end , but inserting elements can be slow because all elements in the List after the insertion point have to be shifted to make a free slot. I happened to have a requirement of splitting a list with over 200,000 records into smaller lists with about 3000 each, which brought me to this thread, and I tested both methods and found the running time is almost the same.
