I have gotten it to work until I try to do output redirection and it just destroys everything. When I run this code, it goes straight to the default case of the fork (). I have no idea why.

So you don't need to (and shouldn't try to) open it explicitly -- just read from the standard input, as you would read from the terminal when input isn't redirected.
